Set 1

 

Renew – Renovate – Upgrade - Update

Renew: Every year I renew my membership of the sports club.

Renovate: He renovates old houses and sells them at a profit.

Upgrade: It's very simple to upgrade the indexing software.

Update:  You must update your software version.

 

Set 2

 

Appreciate - Assess - Evaluate - Estimate

Appreciate: There's no point buying him expensive wines - he doesn't appreciate them.

Assess: The insurers will need to assess the flood damage.

Evaluate: It's impossible to evaluate these results without knowing more about the research methods employed.

Estimate: Government sources estimate a long-term 50 percent increase in rail fares.

Elderly - Historic - Historical - Outdated 

Elderly:  elderly relatives.

Historic: historic buildings.

Historical: Many important historical documents were destroyed when the library was bombed.

Outdated:  outdated ideas.

Allocate – Assign – Devote - Distribute

Allocate: The government is allocating £10 million for health education.

Assign: UN troops were assigned the task of rebuilding the hospital.

Devote: He devoted his life to serving his family, friends, and neighbours.

Distribute: The books will be distributed free in local schools.

 

Set 5

 

Assemble – Build – Compose – Manufacture

Assemble: We assembled in the meeting room after lunch.

Build: We want to build a better future for our children.

Compose: Prokofiev started composing at the age of five.

Manufacture: He works for a company that manufactures car parts.

 

Set 6

 

Glimpse - Gaze - View - Glance

Glimpse: We glimpsed the ruined abbey from the train windows.

Gaze: Annette gazed admiringly at Warren as he spoke.

View: Do you have any views about/on what we should do now?

Glance: She glanced around/round the room to see who was there.
